Greatness (Poetry)

Great Poetry

How Do I Love Thee?

By Elizabeth Barett Browning (1806-1861)

This poem is about how the author/reader works for both, loves someone/thing. She talks about all that she would do and give to love its love and all she would do to show her love to the other one. I think this poem is a “great” poem, because it has so much good imagery, in which u can feel and think of something in every line.

“I love thee to the level of everyday’s most quiet need, by sun and candle light.” This line is about how she would loves him, no matter if its day or night (sun or candlelight), and also how she loves him 100% the way he is, so she loves him simply the way he is.

“if, god choose, I shall but love thee better after death.”, this line means that if she would be assured that she could love him after she would be death, she would even kill herself for him to love him even more.

I find this poem very touching, and also a very good love poem since most of them are kind of boring and odd, but as I said before, I like the imagery and I think the author did a great job, so this is my poem of greatness.

  1. What you've done here is given a fair summary of the poem. I was waiting for you to explain and support your statement about imagery, but it never came.

In order to write a successful essay about a piece of literature, you have to make sure all of the "pieces fit together." Meaning, your examples must represent the statement you've made. You would do well to select a line that shows how her imagery is working in the poem.

What you've done is selected two lines and "translated" them into modern English. This doesn't prove greatness.

Take your time. I know you can do better.
